Brigid's Cloak
Visioning a Multi-Generational, Multi-Talented, Intentional Genealogy Community for Lesbians

Brigid’s Cloak is currently a conceptual cottage community of lesbian womyn. We are seeking multi-generational and multi-talented womyn who want to vision with us, and then buy-in to help manifest the vision in the Pacific Northwest. Conceptually, Brigid’s Cloak will be a community of household owners who have purchased and developed their land collective, with joint-tenancy and right of survivorship, thereby creating intentional genealogy within the community.
Our name comes from Brigid, who is both a revered saint and powerful Celtic Goddess. Whether saint or Goddess, it's the legend of Brigid's cloak that inspires the vision for this womyn’s community. Brigid went to the king of Leinster, in Ireland, to ask for land to build her abby. She chose land where water and firewood could be gathered easily, but the king would not give up such fertile land to women. So, Brigid returned the next day with four sisters. This time she asked for only the land her cloak would cover. The king laughed, but agreed. Brigid instructed her sisters to take the corners of her cloak and walk in the four directions. Miraculously, Brigid’s cloak expanded to cover the land she originally asked for, and the king was forced to honored his word. Thus, Brigid’s Cloak is a symbol of womyn taking land from the patriarchy. If you are interested in such a venture, reach out and let’s talk.
In our case, our "abby" will be a barn built with four containers. Between the containers will be the main room of the barn. This main room will be our large community room with kitchen and living room, where we can gather as a community for celebrations and other activities. One of the containers will be converted into a wood and metal shop. Another will be converted into an art studio with pottery wheel and kiln, as well as all other forms of art and crafts. The two remaining containers will house community owned tools and supplies. Beside the abby can be a large community garden, and eventually a large enough green house to include a community hot tub! And of course we would like to use as much alternative energy as possible.
If you can add to the vision, or make it better in any way, we invite you to vision with us.
